Mateo Nuez (the walnut), Pepa Pacana(the pecan), and Miguelito Macadamia lived in a brightly painted, ceramic Talavera bowl on the kitchen counter. When the humans were home, they were just ordinary, quiet tree nuts taking a longsiesta. But the second the front door clicked shut…

💃 ¡La Fiesta Begins!
“¡Vámonos!” shouted Mateo Nuez, wiggling his wrinkled shell. “The giantseñores and señoras are gone! Let the fiesta commence!”
Miguelito Macadamia, who was perfectly round and not very smart, immediately rolled right off the counter. ¡Boink! He bounced onto the woven rug. “I am a mighty Spanish bull! ¡Toro, toro!” he cheered, spinning in a circle until he made himself dizzy.
Pepa Pacana blinked. “Wait, did they leave? Is it time for a vacation? Should I pack my tiny sombrero?”
“¡No, Pepa!” Mateo said, clicking castanets that were actually just two dried breadcrumbs. “We have the whole casa to ourselves! We can dance the flamenco on the shiny tile floor!”

📬 The Mail Slot Monster
Suddenly, there was a loud rattle at the front door. ¡Clac-clac-clac!
The nuts froze.
“¡Ay, caramba!” gasped Mateo. “Someone is trying to come in! Quick, we have to pretend nobody is home! Tell them we are out buying churros!”
“I’ll lock the doors!” yelled Miguelito, rolling straight into a table leg and falling over. “Ouch. The table is very stubborn today.”
“Hide!” whispered Mateo. “If they see us moving, the fiesta is over forever!”

🙈 The Best Hiding Spots Ever (Or Not)
The three nuts scrambled to hide, proving instantly that they were the absolute worst hiders in the entire world.
- Mateo Nuez squeezed behind a tall glass bottle of spicy hot sauce. “They will never see me,” he whispered, staring proudly at his own reflection in the glass. “Oh good, this handsome luchador is hiding with me.”
- Pepa Pacana grabbed a bright red paper napkin, threw it over her head, and stood right in the middle of the floor. “I am a beautiful red flower,” she declared happily. “Nobody looks closely at a flower.”
- Miguelito Macadamia found a dropped tortilla chip, held it over his head like a little roof, and stood completely still. “I am a crunchy triangle,” he hummed softly. “A quiet, salty triangle.”

🌬️ A False Alarm
For ten whole minutes, the house was perfectly silent. Nobody came in.
Finally, Mateo peeked around his hot sauce bottle. He waddled over to the front door and looked down. It was just el cartero—the mail carrier—who had dropped a bunch of letters through the door slot.
“Tranquilos, mis amigos,” Mateo announced, puffing out his chest. “It was just paper. Our genius hiding skills saved us once again.”
Pepa threw off her napkin. “¡Fantástico! I really was invisible!”
Miguelito Macadamia carefully lowered his tortilla chip. “That was close,” he said, taking a tiny nibble of his crunchy roof. “But next time, I’m hiding in the piñata in the living room. I hear it is filled with candy in there.”
Mateo nodded sagely. “Good plan, Miguelito. ¡Muy bien!”
And with that, the three silly nuts went back to rolling around the kitchen floor, absolutely certain they were the smartest snacks in the house.
